Last week ended up being a pretty big week. We have a ton of stuff to cover. Lets kick it off with a story on the “beautiful people”.

Sunglass Hut Targets Themselves To White Shoppers Only
Mall franchise Sunglass Hut is being sued by a former employee of eighteen years for wrongful termination and human rights violations.

His complaint includes:

  • “At some point during the year of 2010, Mr. Venezia was approached by high level members of the defendant who verbally reprimanded plaintiff for plaintiff’s failure to conform to previously given directive to lessen the amount of black and Hispanic employees. Plaintiff was reminded that black and Hispanic employees did not properly represent the customers who shopped at the SoHo stores and thus said employees were not a good look for the store.
  • “Additionally, plaintiff was instructed to hire white beauty people for the store.”

Venezia claims he continued to hire black and Hispanic employees anyway, so the bosses took away his power to hire people, wrote him up for it, and eventually fired him for it. Along the way, he says, his regional manager rejected all six candidates he suggested for the assistant manager’s job, “based solely on said candidates being minority.”

Yahoo Censors Tumblr
Yahoo said when they purchased Tumblr they would make no changes to how it operates but they are forcing the Tumblr unit to change its terms of service and no longer allow any type of adult photos.

Teen Commits Suicide In New Mexico
Carlos Vigil of Albuquerque, New Mexico committed suicide at the young age of seventeen. Carlos was taken off life support on July 16th. Carlos’ mother, Jacqueline Vigil, spoke with KRQE and said that her son had been bullied since he was at least 8 years old. “He had this lunch box, a smiley face lunch box, and people thought it was the funniest lunch box ever, and they made fun of him for it,” Jacqueline is quoted as saying. “They grabbed it on the school bus and just threw it on the floor and broke it. It’s just little things like that.”

Carlos’ father, Ray Vigil, told a similar story to NBC affiliate KOB-TV, noting, “We found out three years ago that he was going through this stuff and we’ve been trying to help him every day since. We realize he’s been going through it every day since he was in the third grade, that’s a long time for a child to hold that within himself.”

Carlos left one last message on his twitter before he killed himself which included the chilling words, “The kids in school are right, I am a loser, a freak, and a fag and in no way is that acceptable for people to deal with.”

McDonalds Gives Employees A Budget
McDonalds has partnered with Visa and launched a website for McDonalds Employees which includes this budget guide. The sample budget includes having a second job, presumably because both jobs pay minimum wage, and expects a car payment of $150 with monthly rent of $600. Heating and electric is budgeted at under $100 per month. Even when I was living in a two bedroom apartment in the 90′s I don’t think my gas and electric was ever under that but this is a second revised budget they have released. The first McDonalds budget had $0 for heating. I expect that was either just a typo or they expected their employees to freeze every night. Overall I don’t know if an employer should be giving employees budgets to live by but the sample budget they give seems unrealistic. However, it does give employees a lesson in money management since we no longer teach that in public schools.

Ohio Prisons In The News Again
Ohio prisons have partnered with the local electric company to turn off power up to four hours per day. They will receive almost half a million dollars per year from the power company for doing this. The prisons are already without air condition so now they are turning off cell fans, ceiling fans, and lights. This just seems like a bad idea. I am sure the inmates and guards will survive it although it will increase tensions which could lead to more inmates fighting or even attacking guards which the Ohio prison system has admitted is on the rise.

NRA Invading Public Schools
Four states have signed into law a partnership between public schools and the NRA. Yes you heard it right the NRA. As part of the program in Missouri, Texas, North Carolina, and Virginia first through third graders can participate in the Eddie Eagle Program which does have some gun safe information taught but also puts guns in a necessity, everyone needs one light. It seems like the goal is to bring in more NRA members as after the program is completed information is given for the child and family to join the NRA.

Police On The Loose
In New Mexico, a cop slams a woman on the ground that is having a diabetic attack. She never even resisted officers. I can see going through the cuffing process at first but this seems excessive.

Arizona Sheriff Continues Illegal Raids
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has dropped hundreds of deportation proceedings in Arizona as they have occurred using illegal means by Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Arpaio is still violating court orders and performing illegal raids and other racial profiling. The day after ICE dropped the deportations Arpaio performed raids at the Uncle Sam chains and arrested six individuals for being suspected of entering the country illegally.

Drunk Arizona Police Officer Points Gun At Store Clerk
An off duty Tucson Police officer was arrested in Pima County after entering a convenience store drunk and pointing a gun at the clerk. He did this multiple times for no reason. Tucson Police said Office Kyle James McCartin was terminated as he was with the department only nine months and on probationary status.

Florida Police Officers Ignore Medical Emergency Resulting in A Death
Racial tensions are even higher in Florida as African American Allen Daniel Hicks Senior crashed into the guardrail off Interstate 275 in Florida. Hicks was speaking incoherently to police and unable to move his left arm. He was arrested and booked into the Orient Road Jail. Hicks was never medically screened. He spent the entire evening internally bleeding in his brain, urinating on himself on his jail cell floor. Deputies finally realized he had a medical emergency and transported him to Tampa General Hospital almost 24 hours after he first had his stroke. He slipped into a coma and died last week, about three months after his arrest.

Protests Around The Nation
On Saturday hundreds of protests occurred around the United States at capital buildings, federal court buildings and police departments. This is a peaceful protest over the Trayvon Martin killing.

“I think it would be useful for us to examine some state and local laws to see if they are designed in such a way that they may encourage the kinds of altercations and confrontations and tragedies that we saw in the Florida case,” President Obama said the day before the protests.

In his comments on Friday, Obama also urged all Americans to try to understand the Martin case from the perspective of African-Americans.

“There is a history of racial disparities in the application of our criminal laws,” the president said. “A lot of African-American boys are painted with a broad brush. If a white male teen was involved in the same kind of scenario … both the outcome and the aftermath might have been different.”

Iphone Is A Killer
Apple is investigating if an Iphone some how electrocuted a Chinese woman. She was killed by electric shock according to the corner when she answered a call on her iPhone 5 while it was charging.

Another Animal Is Close To Extinction
The Iberian Lynx is expected to be extinct within the next fifty years. Only about 250 Lynx are in the wild. In the 1950′s Lynx had over 15,000 square miles roam but currently they are using less than 500 miles. This is mainly due to the farmers efforts to eradicate rabbits in Spain. Rabbits are the main source of food for them.
