Rude Is The New Black
Why do people make commitments and then not honor them?
My younger brother, 27, should be old enough to know better. His girlfriend has asked my mom and myself to keep an eye out for a dog for her. She had thought for a long time and said she really wanted a male pug. My mom told her that it might be hard to come by a male pug for free or close to free but we’d keep our eyes open for one. Well really late Friday night, I found her the perfect dog for free. I called my mom and asked her to call my brother the next morning to let them know I found one. If they really wanted the dog, he could pick him up at 4 p.m. on Saturday. I, also, asked her to find out if they wanted to pick the dog up or if they wanted is to pick him up.
Saturday morning, my mom called them and they sounded excited about having a new friend in the house. My brother was working all day and his girlfriend had her two kids plus my brother’s son so it would have been rough for her to pick up the dog. My brother asked my mom if we’d pick it up and then he’d swing by after he got off work to pick him up. My mom said no problem and even joked about my brother getting off late. My brother confirmed that he got off between 8-9 and would head straight to us.
It’s now almost midnight and no sign of my brother. He’s been to our house many times so I know he didn’t get lost. Our phones, home and cell, are both working but we didn’t receive a single call from him or her. My mom spent a lot of time this evening attempting to get a hold of them. She had the idea that she would pick up the dog and bring it to them so they’d have a chance to bond before it was bed time. They never returned her call. Now, both of their phones are turned off which is a common thing they do when they retire for the evening.
Would it have killed either or them to return my mom’s calls or call us since they knew we had the dog? We were completely unprepared to have a male dog in our house. Our two female dogs are exactly happy to have a male intruder. Not to mention the fact that it is a MALE dog and wants to scent everything in site. If they would have informed us early in the day that they were not going to pick it up tonight, we could have made arrangements and not be left scrambling at midnight to find newspaper (not house trained) and a place for him to sleep tonight.
And to think, we RSVP to every party invitation we’ve received from them. Maybe I should expect this from them since they usually RSVP as a maybe to our invitations and then rarely show up. Although, the one time they said no, they actually showed up.
How did this world become so filled with inconsiderate people?
