An outpouring of support for the victims of the shooting at a Safeway grocery store that killed six and injured at least 13 others at the Tucson Together We Thrive including Daniel Hernandez Jr., the intern credited with saving Giffords’ life by applying pressure to her wound, Arizona governor Jan Brewer, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, President Obama, and others.

I was impressed by many of the speakers at this event. I’ve heard that many others were impressed as well. This was a great showing of the Tucson community spirit. It was amazing to see my hometown come together under such tragic circumstances.

As always, our thoughts are with the victims of this tragedy and their family and friends.

Apparently, Tucson Police Department officers have nothing better to do than pull over people and check the immigration status of people who fit a certain look. I have heard so many horror stories about SB1070 but none hit this close to home. That is until tonight when Tim was racially profiled which last I checked was still being challenged in Arizona.

From Wikipedia: On July 28, 2010, Judge Bolton issued a ruling on the Justice Department suit, United States of America v. Arizona, granting a preliminary injunction that blocked the most key and controversial portions of SB 1070 from going into effect. These included requiring police to check the immigration status of those arrested or stopped, which the judge ruled would overwhelm the federal government handling of immigration cases, and could mean that legal immigrants would be wrongly arrested. Judge Bolton wrote that “Federal resources will be taxed and diverted from federal enforcement priorities as a result of the increase in requests for immigration status determination that will flow from Arizona.” Her ruling was not a final decision, but rather was based on the belief that the Justice Department was likely, but not certain, to win a full later trial in federal court on these aspects. Judge Bolton made no rulings in the other six lawsuits. Governor Brewer said that the injunction would be appealed, and on July 29 this was done in the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco. State Senator Pearce predicted that the legal battle would eventually end up in the Supreme Court and likely be upheld by a 5–4 margin.

And I mean racial profiling. I have yet to hear of a light skinned individual being asked about their immigration status. On the other hand, I personally know a handful of people who are not light skinned that have been asked about their immigration status. Tucson Police Department even hassled an employee of the state prison while in uniform about his immigration status. And to think, Governor Brewer claims “racial profiling will not be tolerated.” Well, Governor Brewer come down to Tucson and knock a few heads for TPD didn’t get the memo.

Here’s the story:

Tim ran out to do a couple quick errands for me and stopped by the P.O Box to pick up our mail. When he left the post office, he passed a police officer who promptly turned on his lights. Now, Tim couldn’t have picked up enough speed within a few feet so no way he was speeding. The police officer stated that he stopped Tim for a ‘random DUI check’. He was asked for the normal license and registration and if he had been drinking tonight. The officer went to his patrol car. When he returned, the police officer asked him for his green card. Tim informed him that he was born in California and had no reason to have a green card. The officer retreated to his patrol car to ‘verify immigration status’. After 5 or so minutes, the officer returned and said “you’re lucky because I just got another call” and the officer (who should really be called a JERK!!!!) threw Tim’s license at him. Tim asked for the officer’s card and the officer refused to give him any information.

Strike 1: Asking for immigration status when it’s clearly AGAINST the law.
Strike 2: Not providing officer information
Strike 3: Pissing off the wrong person

I will be contacting anyone and everyone to report this incident. It is a tragedy when our police department clearly oversteps their legal authority. If you cannot trust the police department, who can you trust. We teach our children to trust the police. We teach our children to listen to authority. But, in Arizona, how can one teach their child to trust police and respect their authority when they are not following the law.
The statue states that “A person shall maintain each license plate so it is clearly legible and so that the name of this state at the top of the license plate is not obscured.” A fee of at least $150 will be levied if you do not follow the law.

A few questions come to mind; a) How often can you be ticketed for the same “crime”? b) Will the photo radar tickets add this “crime” even if the original crime is found invalid?
We have had an OUTSTANDING plate cover on our plate for many years and it has always brought comments, snickers, and laughs where ever we go. We even registered a domain with the phrase because of it’s hilarity. Sadly, it covers the state name and we just came back in from the garage after removing the cover. I haven’t decided what we are going to do with it since it will be useless to give it to anyone in AZ.
